Storm Preparation for Swimming Pools and Spas

Storm Preparation

A Storm is coming, What do I do?

Storm preparation: what to do about an impending hurricane.

Before the Storm:

1st: Assess the situation.  Review the current forecast, and determine the time available for preparation.  Remember the last few hours before an impending storm is NOT the time to think about preparation.  If you have a current swimming pool or spa service provider, discuss with them your specific site requirements beforehand. Make sure it is clear which party is responsible for preparation.  DO NOT ASSUME that your pool or spa service provider will automatically accomplish storm preparation for you.  Also, be aware that the more notice your pool or spa company has, the better they are able to respond.

2nd: If you don’t have a swimming pool or spa service company and want your staff to prepare the pool or spa for a storm (or do it yourself if a homeowner):

  • Don’t drain the swimming pool or spa completely.  If heavy rainfall is expected, you may decide to lower the level of the pool.  In this case, one to two feet should be sufficient.  If you are lowering the pool or spa level, keep a close eye on the pumps.  Don’t let the pump lose prime and run dry.  Depending on actual site conditions, you should be able to close the skimmers/gutter drains, thus only draining from the main drain at the bottom of the pool or spa.
  • Pre-SHOCK or Superchlorinate the swimming pool or spa water.
  • Turn OFF power to the pumps/chemical feeders, etc. before the storm arrives.
  • It is not generally recommended to place deck/patio furniture into the pool.  The finish may be damaged.   Additionally, pool water chemistry (esp. after shocking the pool) may damage the furniture.
